The New Year is creeping up, and it’s that time of year where the words ‘New Year’ are always followed closely by ‘Resolution’. One of the most common New Year Resolutions out there is weight loss. Although every resolution is unique, most of them share one commonality; almost everybody sets one & almost everybody fails. There are a multitude of reasons why we don’t succeed when it comes to fulfilling our resolutions. So what can we do about it? Listed below are a couple reasons why resolutions see such low success rates & how to get past these road blocks.
Can’t find the “Why”
Many people tell me they want to lose weight. When I ask why, I get answers like “Just because / I want to look hot next summer / I want to be a size 4” etc. If anybody’s ever given weight loss a serious shot, they’ll know that it’s not quick or easy. In fact, it can be a long, tough road. For most, once they realize this cold, hard truth, they subconsciously decide that the big ol’ box of cookies is more appealing than the hot body they want next summer.
On the flip side, when I get answers such as “I need my confidence back / I want to keep up with my kids” the success rate is drastically higher. Why? Well that’s exactly it. These people have found their “Why”. And they think about their “Why” every time something crops up that might lead them away from their ultimate goal.
Before you set your New Year Resolution, make sure your “Why” is powerful enough to push you past the tough times.
Missing point “A”
You decide to host a party. A friend calls, tells you where he is and asks for directions on how to get to your place. Easy answer right? Another friend calls and also asks for directions, but he can’t tell you where he is because he’s lost. Both friends have the same destination, but the second one will have a tough time finding your place, if he does at all.
As a whole, we’ve gotten pretty good at setting goals. They’re clear, concise and realistic. What we lack is an understanding of our starting point; our Point “A”. Your GPS won’t give you directions unless you give it a start and end point. Your weight loss journey is no different. Before you start running full tilt towards your goal, you need to know where you are right now. How much do you exercise? How many calories do you eat? How much sleep do you get? These are some of the questions that you need to establish solid answers for. That way, you can adjust each component based on your goals.
Don’t become a statistic. Crush your resolution this year with the right mindset, info and determination. Happy Holidays to all!
